Contrast & Concession

Contrast shows a difference between ideas; concession recognises an unexpected contrast. But joins clauses, although introduces a clause, however links sentences or clauses with suitable punctuation, and despite is followed by a noun phrase or -ing form.

What this grammar skill means

These connectors are not interchangeable. Children should learn the grammatical shape that follows each connector as well as the relationship it expresses.

Why this skill matters

Contrast and concession help children connect ideas that do not simply agree or follow each other. These structures are important for balanced explanations, comparisons and more mature argumentative writing.

Core rules and patterns

  • Contrast highlights a difference between ideas; concession acknowledges one fact while showing that another result still follows. But, although, however and despite can all express contrastive relationships with different grammar.
  • But coordinates comparable elements or clauses. Although introduces a dependent clause. However often links complete ideas as an adverbial connector. Despite is followed by a noun phrase or -ing form rather than a finite clause in its ordinary pattern.
  • Good connector choice depends on both meaning and sentence structure. Replacing one connector with another may require rewriting the surrounding grammar and punctuation.

Worked examples

The task was difficult, but Maya finished it.

But coordinates two contrasting independent clauses.

Although the task was difficult, Maya finished it.

Although introduces a dependent concessive clause.

Despite the difficulty, Maya finished the task.

Despite is followed by the noun phrase the difficulty rather than a full finite clause.

More examples

  • I was tired, but I finished the work.
  • Although I was tired, I finished the work.
  • Despite being tired, I finished the work.

Common mistakes to watch

  • Using although and but together in the same basic structure.
  • Following despite with a full finite clause without the required structure.
  • Using however without sentence-appropriate punctuation.

Watch for these

Tricky cases and useful distinctions

  • Avoid pairing although with but in the same basic clause relationship in standard school writing; each already signals the contrast.
  • Despite and in spite of are prepositional structures and do not normally take a that-clause directly without additional wording.

Try it

Short practice prompts

  1. 1.Rewrite one contrast using but, although and despite.
  2. 2.Choose the connector that fits the following grammatical structure.
  3. 3.Punctuate a sentence containing however.

Questions parents often ask

Quick clarifications

What is the difference between contrast and concession?

Contrast simply shows difference, while concession often means “this fact is true, but the expected result did not prevent the other fact.”

Can however replace but without other changes?

Not always. However commonly behaves as an adverbial connector and usually requires different punctuation and sentence structure.
